OKLAHOMA CITY – In the sixth edition of the MetroTech OKCPS Game of the Week, John Marshall laced it up for a non-district tout with Shawnee at Taft Stadium. The Bears scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to come back and defeat the Wolves 22-13 for their first win of the season.

Trailing at the halftime break 13-0, John Marshall head coach Chris Berus challenged his senior leaders to set the tone in the second half. Senior wideout Kylin Drennon accepted the challenge in just a few seconds. He took the second half kickoff 98 yards to the house to put the Bears on the board. After a successful 2-point conversion, John Marshall trailed Shawnee 13-8.

A few possessions later, Drennon stepped up on the defensive side of the ball as he intercepted a Shawnee pass to set up excellent field position for John Marshall. On their next offensive series, Bears’ senior quarterback Dorien Middleton orchestrated a couple of first downs to drive deep into Wolves territory. Once in the redzone, Drennon scored his second touchdown of the contest, an 8-yard rush, to give John Marshall the 16-13 lead.

Heading to the 4th quarter with just a 3-point lead, John Marshall needed their defense to step up. The Bears were able to force another turnover, this time a fumble that was recovered by JM’s Aalijah Kirby. The offense was able to continue to move the ball courtesy of Middleton’s legs, as he scampered for multiple first downs in the final quarter. Midway through, the Bears found paydirt once again and converted the 2-point try to extend their lead to two scores at 22-13. Shawnee wasn’t able to do much coming down the stretch to make it a game as the Bears cruised to the victory.

John Marshall’s Kylin Drennon was named the MetroTech OKCPS Player of the Game after finishing with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. “Our guys were resilient today, and that’s why we were able to pull out this victory.” said Bears head coach Chris Berus postgame. “I’m so proud of the way they never quit and very proud of our senior leaders who answered the call when our backs were against the wall. We need to take this second-half resiliency into our battle next week.”
